Bronchoscopy is an investigative procedure performed under sedation as a day procedure. A small flexible camera is inserted through the nose or mouth into the major airways of the lungs.
For patients who have abnormalities in their lungs discovered on CT scan, this is an important test. Bronchoscopy is also used to investigate symptoms such as cough, wheeze or lung infections, chronic cough or the coughing of blood. Lung cancer and inflammatory diseases of the lungs and airways can also be diagnosed this way.
Small amounts of saline solution are introduced into the airways during the procedure, and then sent off for testing. This determines whether there is any infection or any abnormal cells present. Biopsies can be taken from the lung tissue, lymph nodes adjacent to the lung, or the lining of the airways, where necessary.
